Things To See And Do When Having Bradford Breaks

The city of Bradford can be found in West Yorkshire, a county in England in the UK. Built close to the mountain range of the Pennines Bradford was perfectly placed to blossom during the time known as the industrial revolution. The fact is that, during the eighteen hundreds, Bradford stood at the very forefront of the Industrial revolution and the town quickly became an important international centre of textile manufacture, specialising in wool and Bradford gained the name of being the world’s wool capital. Because of the abundance of raw materials of coal, iron ore and soft water the town experienced extremely rapid growth in its manufacturing base and a correspondingly rapid growth in population. Sadly the textile industry fell into decline in the mid twentieth century. Ever since that time Bradford has developed into something of a popular short break destination with a number of guest houses offering Bradford bed and breakfast.

Bradford’s industrial heritage has bequeathed us a legacy of fine Victorian architecture, which include; the Venetian Gothic Wool Exchange, the Neoclassical St. George’s Hall, Alhambra Theatre and the City Hall with it’s gothic extension at the rear. The most ancient construction to be discovered in the confines of Bradford is the Cathedral, which dates back to medieval times, and was, for much of its life, a small parish church. Unfortunately only a few buildings survive from this time, except for Bolling Hall. Bolling Hall is now home to a museum, situated only 1 mile in distance from the city centre. Sited in a beautifully quiet garden, the museum takes folk on a fascinating journey, to a period dating back about 500 years, through the lives of the families who once had Bolling Hall as their home.

The city of Bradford is home to the National Media Museum, which is one of the most popular museums to be found outside of England’s capital city, London. At one time called the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, the fabulous National Media Museum is a free to enter visitor attraction which is suitable for folk of all ages. The National Media Museum has 3 cinemas, of which one is the best in the UK. You can discover television’s past, present and future in Experience TV, watch your favourite moments in television in TV Heaven, muck around with lenses, colour and light in the Magic Factory and experience the fascinating world of animation and also watch a real animator at work in the Animation Gallery. At weekends and during holidays there is a highly exciting packed schedule of activities, talks and free tours.
